The online video service YouTube has long accepted pseudonyms and alteregos, but now it’s encouraging users to provide their real names and link to their Google Plus profile. The idea is for one Google-wide identity, something which new YouTube users are said to be in favour of.

In future, users will be able to review their old comments so as to choose which ones they’re happy to be publicly associated with. It’s only an option at this stage, and the choice remains for users not to use their full names if they prefer. Actor, Wil Wheaton has already made his views known, saying he felt forced towards Google+ when trying to leave a comment on a video.

However, the lists of anonymous commenters and chains of offensive comments are something that YouTube might do well to leave behind. Wired.com has claimed that more business would be attracted from advertisers and filmmakers if this issue was dealt with.
